can't 'losing the dressing room' be as simple as

just not being able to get your message across to the players any more for whatever reason? Or not being able to motivate them as well as you could before? Usually because players have lost a bit of confidence in the manager's ability.

Agree with you that it's very rare that players would actively go on the field looking to lose, but think losing the dressing room can be more subtle than that.
