I gave up on Ulysses after about ten pages. Couldn't understand a word!
Many years ago (80s) I took the train from London to Norwich for a home game against Millwall and tried to settle down to read Nietzsche (can't remember which). Given the size of my hangover this was probably a big mistake in itself. But shortly after leaving three Millwall fans plonked themselves down at my table with several cans each. The biggest and oldest meathead holding forth to his younger buddies on the benefits of unbridled hooliganism. Extraordinarily distracting especially as I was expecting them any minute to engage me in conversation. Fortunately the only evidence of my footballing loyalties was a small NCFC badge on my jacket safely stowed above.
After half an hour the spliffs were out and they departed to the toilet to smoke them and thankfully never came back. I think I got to page three without really taking anything in and never picked the book up again.
I did see them later pissed/stoned and arsing about down by the river. Sadly, despite a few close calls, none of them fell in.
