Crimea had been a part of Russia for centuries until Khruschev....

(an ethnic Ukrainian) gifted it to the Ukrainian SSR during the Soviet era, much against the wishes of the people of Crimea, I should add.

When the former Soviet Union has carved up by the leaders of the CIS in 1991, its an open secret that Yeltsin was pissed (as he was most of the time during that period) and waived through Crimea remaining a part of Ukraine, again much against the wishes of the people of Crimea.

Putin and Medvedev have tried to get Crimea back into Russia for many years and to be fair, the 2014 referendum was one of the fairest polls ever held in Russian history and the result overwhelming. It was only denounced as a sham by Ukraine and the West because we didn't like the result.

Nobody was killed when Russia re-occupied Crimea and during my visit to Feodossia last summer I saw no evidence whatsoever that the local populace are anything other then delighted to be part of Russia again.
