if they keep trying something spectacular and it works once that 'piece if genius' will turn up endlessly on TV every time they are discussed and shape the public's, and thus sponsors', perception of them and their value(when did you last hear Zola discussed without seeing that flicked goal against us?).
The countless failed attempts will never turn up on TV again. Similarly 'simple' passes, even if completed and the best thing to do, will never turn up again on TV. So they're worthless.
As you say, this is about playing for themselves not the team. But they get rewarded for it, so...
