I think it makes a pretty big difference for some teams

just the match up in styles. I think England, for example, have a reasonable chance against Germany and France, but much less against Spain and Italy, just because of the way they play.

So if Germany could knock out Spain/Italy then I think they'd be in with a genuine outside shot at winning the tournament.

Likewise, Spain would much rather play a slightly more open team like Belgium, England or France - get in a toe-to-toe battle and just out class them. Against Italy they could struggle to break them down and get picked off on the break.
