I've done brickweave in the past, which is rewarding visually but f**king tedious to lay

As far as the process goes, you need to dig down a bit and chuck down some rubble to make a base, then bash it down with a whacker plate or if you're not equipped that way, use a hefty sledge hammer to just bang it down. Chuck down some sand, scrape level with a long bit of wood then put down the bricks or slabs or whatever. If doing bricks be prepared to lose the will to live and also use proper paving bricks, they have little ridges on them to help space themselves properly. Old house bricks won't cut it.
Then tip some fine sand on and brush in to fill the cracks and hold the whole thing together. If you're doing slabs you'll already have your feet up and a tube of deep heat on your wrecked back.

In summary, if you've got a lot to do, get a man in. Jamie Gooch paving have signs up all over the place (Norwich), and their work looks good. Can't vouch for them personally but I'd probably do it myself again in future, just because I'm not a quitter and hate being defied by nature.
