I think he knew the brief was "stay in the PL". He was trying to do that with the
resources he had at his disposal. The "fans" demanded flowing football, but the resources dictated that the only way to get points was by playing cautious football. Even then, it's unlikely that he would have avoided relegation, but what really screwed him was the quality of the squad.
