Does not make sense for either party

Why would we not just pay compensation to Hamilton for Neil & his cronies?
Why would Hamilton want us to pay the compensation due in the form of buying their best player?

Why would we agree to buy a player instead of compensation and then lumber ourselves with his wages for 2 years? Even if he is only on 5k a week (would think he is on near 10k) it equates to over 500k in wages over the length of the contract.
