Airbnb question, can anyone help?

I've not used it before - trying to reserve an apartment for next February, have been in contact with the hosts who also don't seem to know (they're fairly new to it) - when trying to confirm the reservation it seems to want paying all up front. Is that what you have to do? When using homeaway or others you normally pay a deposit until nearer the time.

Can't find any help on the app or site. Or at least can't see it at the moment.
