The fact that financial value is so often attributed to outcomes has changed the way people perceive the game. This isn't a recent change, rather it's happened over decades. Transfers are an example - you often see people talking about how much teams spend as a measure of success in transfer windows. Fans can't see past the money because money is a ready-made success indicator, once you take silverware out of the equation.
