if you check the choice it was between coming 17th in the Prem next season or coming 2nd in the Championship. So both result in us being in the Prem the season after. And I rather suspect the season coming 2nd would be more fun (a season coming 17th would basically resemble this season).
As for which would give us a better chance in two seasons time the argument that being in the Prem throughout would give us more chance to gradually strengthen and therefore a better base is a strong one. On the other hand the fact that we are finishing 17th again in this scenario suggests we aren't making a good job of it. Maybe getting the momentum from a 2nd place season and actually winning a lot would give us more of a springboard into the following season (we probably played our best football this season early on when we still had momentum from last year, before the failure to get results to match saw the momentum and performance levels ebb away)
