But the way I would have done it with the smaller clubs/cheaper players, eg Halford, would have been to go in and start negotiating hard as soon as it was clear Deano was on the way. It's like any market - you can exploit uncertainty. Once you've made the sale, the uncertainty disappears and the market becomes transparent. Hey ho. Done now.
