Selling Ashton first means that the clubs of potential targets know we need to buy and have money.
If we had bought first, surely West Ham would know we needed to sell Ashton and raise money, thereby lowering our bargaining power to get over-the-odds (as we did) on that transaction?
So you can't really win or lose.
Unless, of course, you buy sh*t...
