... is that Hughes is the waiter (he's providing the service, or the spectacle, after all) and I'm the customer. If I ate at a restaurant and the waiter gave me service that, while not necessarily lazy, was not up to scratch, I'd find it condescending and antagonistic if he went out of his way to thank me for eating in that restaurant.
