In fairness that was never the argument

It was Howson and Dorrans vs playing CDM's that we didn't have.

I can see an argument for playing just one of Naismith or Wes, because playing both means shifting one out of position. They did link up really well at times, although Wes did look a bit lost when stuck to the left flank as he's simply not a winger.

Then again, there's always the option of playing Naismith as a false 9 (a role he performed well at Everton) with Wes as the 10 behind him, but that means dropping Mbokani and not playing a target man...
