I've made this point before, but defending is far more important to staying up than attacking. Statistically teams that score few goals often stay up - the teams that concede the most goals pretty much always go down.
That's why the first thing that people like Pulis, with his reputation for never getting relegated, do when they go in to a new club is to focus on keeping clean sheets. If you can do that then (as we saw against Saints, Villa and Swansea for instance) you don't have to play that well to get a win. However if you leak cheap goals then it is easy to play well (as measured by attractiveness at any rate) and still not win, as we saw quite a lot earlier in the season.
