But the fact is these days what we think players are worth is largely irrelevant because if we won't pay the demanded fee then someone else desperate in the bottom half of the table will.

We just seem to p**s clubs (and probably agents and players) off trying to get a bargain when those days seem to have largely gone (when buying from the upper levels of most league systems anyway).

We've got 5 league games in January and it now looks like we will have played at least three before we bring in anyone other than Pinto. New players don't necessarily mean immediate returns (although I bet sodding Afobe scores on Saturday) but given Neil's comments st the start of the window that's a bit disappointing and suggests we are still having issues getting deals over the line.
