FRS10

Old argument in accounting at football clubs, is whether players should be assets. FRS (Financial Reporting Standard) 10 says yes. This means the cost of the player would sit in the balance sheet, and then be spread over the life. Ie a million pound player 4 year contract, charge to the Profit and Loss would be ?250k per annum. This was when a player is sold the sale value less the value on the balance sheet would in Ashtons case be a gain on the disposal of an asset.

Simple!
