Depends on how you pick your cherries
Is Ward a late developer (at 26?)? Is he just having a one-off good season? Of course it's a gamble. Just like this Ryan Taylor everyone wants us to sign - he's only 21, and having a good season in Div 2 (or whatever it's called this week). He might turn into a premiership-quality defender, but then again, he might only be a half-decent Div 2 fullback. Could go either way.
Macken is a case in point - he was the next big thing a few years ago, and in his last game for Man City the manager chose to play a GOALKEEPER up front instead of bringing him on.
Proven quality costs money, either in fees or in wages.
