I don't have a massive problem with RM playing right back

but Ryan Bennett is head and shoulders above him as a CB and was not the culprit defensively against Watford.

Note how Bennett didn't give Lukaku a kick in the second half, but had run Martin ragged in the first. Whole team played better yes, but the chief reason for the boos just before half time was because Rm had just given the ball away (again) and I'd say the majority of fans were already pissed off that he'd been preferred to Bennett, who'd done very little wrong in the previous 3 games.
