The first time I saw some real volume drinking
Was at the Gillette Cup Final 1981, was at Lords with my Dad supporting Middlesex vs Essex. This was in the days when they didn?t mind what you brought in or drank there.
We were in the unreserved seats in lower grandstand so needed to get there early for a good spot. A few minutes after we arrived (c. 9.00am for 10.45-ish start) some Essex Supporters turned up with three slabs of lager (72 cans) between four of them, that was 18 each and they were all gone by later in the afternoon and then they were on pints after that.
Dad and I couldn?t believe their capacity to drink or the speed at which they could consume lager.
And the result? Middlesex score around 190, Essex chasing lost by around ten runs after being 130-1. A great day.
