My dad too went there with the navy 6 months after the bomb - spoke of total devastation for miles and miles - think even the allied servicemen who visited were in disbelief at how widespread the damage was. My old man was convinced it was the right thing to do (controversial i know) and told me of when his floatilla liberated hong kong of the atrocities they found that the japanese had committed....
