Living and working in Tokyo, I knew loads of people who lived in Singapore.

One thing to remember is it is very small, so you can do most of it in a couple of weeks, easily. They are adding more stuff to do all the time but its small. A year is fine and I know people who have lived there for many years but I know people who have gone bonkers after two.

But...its on the doorstep of southeast Asia, in a similar way to how London is on the doorstep of Europe, so many people I know travel from Singapore, a lot. There are cheap airlines and you can go many places at weekends easily, so if you want stuff to do and like to travel, its a great place to be.

Beer, stupidly expensive. As is all alcohol. Taxes are prohibitive on all booze. There are happy hours and they run all night so you can sit at a bar and order pitchers all night and when you get your bill you could have been charged a different price for every one, even if you ordered the same beer all night, so keep an eye on it. Restaurants as you know them here are pricey but local hawker stands are cheap and cheerful and the way tongo if you learn to like the local food and want a quick bite on a budget.

Underbelly. Singapore has a nightlife culture like lots of southeast Asia. Google orchard towers if you want to know more about it. Its nicknamed thebfoor floors of ******. Its so well known its almost a tourist attraction but if you go over there with work and a gf, beware of your work colleagues culture and how that fits in with your current relationship.

I don't know you at all, and am not going to judge, but there is a hell of a lot of temptation out there. That said, I know a lot of families that moved to Singapore who love it there, the condo life is fabulous for raising kids.

Be very clear about what work will cover. Rent is very expensive. If they can cover that, that's best, because that will probably be your biggest cost if you want to live somewhere nice or central or swanky.

Anyway, a few tips from me.
