Obviously this has been done to death already and all that

But I doubt you'll find a single newly promoted club over the last decade - let alone one promoted twice on the bounce (so with a fair smattering of League 1 players in the squad) who didn't put in 3 or 4 awful performances despite exceeding expectations beyond all imagination.

Every single football team - even the very best - have at least one bad spell in a season. Run of the mill football teams (which in Prem terms, we were, at best) have several of them. I see your Blackburn and Man City, and raise you Spurs away, Arsenal away, and Villa at home. All late in the season. The "he'd been found out! We were going backwards!" argument just doesn't and has never washed.

All ancient history now though. And here's hoping we'll be back in the position Lambert got us into under our new young, driven, take no prisoners Scottish manager.
