In late 70s and 80s it was chants of "what a load of rubbish"..
...or "you don't know what you're doing" which I never joined in with...
Booing has, IMHO, become more prevalent because there's been a move towards entitlement for instant gratification; and also a gap between those representing us on the pitch and those of us in the stands...
There's probably also an element of copying going on which justifies its use...
What I'm saying is it isn't for just one reason...
