The FA ought to introduce a rule saying anyone convicted of a serious offence can't be

employed as a player

Maybe have a non-exhaustive list of serious offences

Then everyone knows where they stand

Lots of professions do this. If I got convicted for fare dodging or sexual assault or GBH, I'd be disbarred, no arguments, no sympathy. No reason why they shouldn't do the same for footballers if they really believe they're role models etc. Then apply it consistently.
