You're trying to tell me that a CEO whose future earning potential is directly correlated to the performance of the club he oversees, is just going to sit by and let the Board overrule him and take a completely opposite direction to the one he believes is the correct one?
A CEO isn't just a figure head, you know. The CEO is ultimately *the* person who is responsible for the management and strategic decisions of a company. The CEO will defer to the wider Board where necessary and will occasionally have to bite their tongue but not to the extent that the company routinely takes a completely different course of action to what the CEO proposes.
McNally is the hand on the tiller - that is why he gets paid so much.
I would perhaps (but only perhaps) buy the argument that others are calling the shots if this was McNally's last gig before retirement or he thought that this was the best job he was ever going to get. But if he harbours any ambition of taking another CEO role he's not going to let his CV get tarnished by other people making the wrong decisions.
