what I find slightly odd about it

is that Phelan has chosen to come to us and be an understudy to an inexperienced manager.

He was understudy to Ferguson, at one of the largest clubs in the world, and expresses a desire to manage. He takes time out from football, and comes back to be understudy to Adams? Really?

There may be people out there who buy into the 'we scoured the whole of Europe and picked the best-in-class candidate', but Phelan is not going to be one of them.

Are we effectively on trial? is Phelan too clever to drop straight into a managerial appointment without first having had an opportunity to get to know the club, the resources, the structure, and quite frankly assess his chances of being able to do anything successful with us?

Let's face it - if he bombs on his first managerial post it's going to be difficult to come back from it. He's not going to want to bomb for reasons beyond his control.
