They think attractive, entertaining football is stuff that comes in bags of cornflakes. They have no conception whatever of how difficult it is to develop, how long it takes to build, how much vision is required at all levels for it to do so.

And in Hughton's case? They were down on him for the style of play - but they never even bothered asking themselves why he saw it necessary to play like that. I did: that's why I softened towards him later in his time. He's been vindicated; it was never going to work for all manner of reasons, but he now looks awfully like our most chronically misunderstood manager of modern times. (2nd most misunderstood: Bruce Rioch).
