You need to leave it a week before putting fish in it.

You need to build up the good bacteria in there and allow the nitrates to settle. The levels are all over the show during the first couple of days.

Make sure you have a water testing kit as water quality is really important. If you stay on top of it though it's an easy task. Let it slip and it becomes a pain in the are. Best thing you can do is after its set up for a week, take a sample of the water to the shop where you want to purchase fish from. They'll test it and tell you what the water is like and give you recommendations on the best type of fish etc. That's if they're a reputable store.
