i've lived in edinburgh the last two years
only once been up to st andrews, but honestly it was great. when the weather is nice, the place is just magical. last night, a few said to go to anstruther, which i would agree with but you might be pushed for time
but the same can be said for edinburgh itself, especially the old town/royal mile but also the meadows and the area around the university
if you're not there for too long, i would follow BWOD's advice and stay in the city. the beaches aren't that great though IMO
