The fact is, though, that Scotland has all the hallmarks of a nation - a strong identity,

distinctive culture, its own legal and education systems, thriving parliament, natural resources, hates its neighbour etc. - and it would probably make a go of independence. It would probably be painful for the first couple of decades, depending on the separation settlement, but whether it will be able to fund the SNP vision as an independent country in the longer term is for me more problematic.
