There's always been a natural tension between creativity and commerce
from the Monkees to One Direction.
However, I don't think you get music at the head of almost cultural revolutions like you did 40, 30 and 20 years ago - and that is what is missing.
Great music is still being written but, as you say, the social dynamic is different now.
My first real awareness of music culture was post-punk, early 80s, new romantics etc - what wave of music as fashion can we really expect now?
It's music... but it's not about heroes in quite the same way.
