No they weren't; not even close.

We were light years ahead of Capello's team in 82, 86, 90, 98 and 02. we weren't great in 06 but we won three games out of four before going out in the QFs on penalties.

We were absolutely dreadful in eveery game four years ago, abominable. How can you begin to compare that performance with any previous tournament?

There seems to be this bizarre view that it's always been like this. It hasn't - people just have short memories.
