but I think the idea is to set a footballing philosophy and then oversee its implementation through ensuring that the coaching, recruitment and management, eg tactics, fit in with and build this philosophy.
I think it's a bulls**t role that undermines the manager because he can only make decisions within certain parameters and may have to work with players he didn't want to sign
