But we needed another outlet. We created a scenario in which we were only likely to get one chance (because we only had one man trying to cause any real damage): Snodgrass had it, and missed it.

Jose's comments after the match weren't kidology. He was amazed by our approach. He's right to be so. The competitor in him may even have felt embarrassed by it on some level.

Oh, and by the way: had we brought on another striker, could we have lost? Yes, of course! That's the risk you take. We'd have both increased our chances of winning, and theirs too. But we weren't prepared to - in circumstances that suggested to me that the manager barely even understands the mathematical reality of the table.
