I went to Primary School in the 1970s
and the only version of 'eeny meeny' that I knew used the 'n' word. It was only as I grew up that I realised what the word meant and that it was in appropriate.
However, that rhyme absolutely stuck in my head; so much so that about, ooh 10 years ago, I stared reciting it (without thinking about where it was going) and actually got to "ni..." before my brain realised what I was doing. It was bizarre - I practically screamed at the stupidity of it.
Clarkson is a professional broadcaster and he needs to learn not to be such a bloody idiot. But is he a racist? On this basis, no of course he isn't. I can understand what appear to be rather daft excuses he is making about 'trying not to say it'.
Doesn't excuse it, doesn't mean it's ok - but I understand it.
