It's a tricky one..
A lot of drivers don't expect you to be on the right of them, so will pull a u turn with no indication straight in front of you.
Sometimes I will filter on the left, sometimes on the right, depends on the conditions.
In slow moving traffic it's more complicated. If a cyclist comes past you on the left, they then need to filter back in to the left hand side in moving traffic, which is fine if you are confident.
I've never really cycled outside London though, so things are probably different elsewhere.
I really do sympathise with drivers as I see a lot of absolute dickhead cyclists riding in unpredictable ways, undertaking left indicating traffic and so on. It must be very hard to keep track of all the movement during rush hour.
My beef is only with drivers who drive carelessly/don't give a s**t if you are cycling and try to drive through you
