4-4-2 is often the same as 4-4-1-1
because in a 4-4-2 one of the 2 strikers will often drop back to link with the midfield anyway.
However, 4-4-1-1 can also be more like 4-5-1 when only one striker is played.
Rather than 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 or 4-5-1 it would be better to debate as to whether the team should play with 2 strikers or 1 striker.
That's what those in the game tell me.
