Sorry, realised I didn't really answer your question. Yes, I find mine really useful - train on it throughout the year, a couple of times a week. Basically boring and at times painful, but efficient - probably essential if you've got other claims on your time (eg family...) but want to stay reasonably fit.
Only problem is being disciplined enough to put the bike on and off it - I ended up buying a really cheap old steel bike, which I keep on there permanently. (And has the double positive that I can put a special turbo tyre on there and so not worry about the wear.)
Not sure whether I'd be as disciplined about putting my normal bike on and off for it training. But then I'm both lazy and mechanically completely useless.
