It works in hockey ? they have green/yellow/red

When green is given it's a short suspension, yellow is longer (around 10). Red is off with the likelihood of a long ban depending on the nature of the offence.

Greens are given out for all the football offences that I hate, not retreating from the ball, verbal, and hitting the ball away. Plus deliberate fouls. Certainly gets the game cleaner + faster.

Yellows are more like football, serious fouls.
