You are forgetting the most successful of those big players get poached by the top clubs

Look down the squad of a team like West Brom, Sunderland, Villa or Stoke... there is not much there. Players who impressed in the championship, failed at the top clubs, and ok players but not good enough for the top clubs to want them. Along with some who fail to make the grade.
