good mpg.......defo a diesel then......
can get 750 miles out of the tank of my passat ( 11 plate 2.0lt 140 diesel)
if you prefer a saloon - passat saloon,
if you prefer a hatchback - golf
if you prefer a large family car with boot - passat estate (like mine).
you dont mention a budget - can get all of the abover from as little as about 8-9grand, about 8 years old.... with full service will last for 150,000 miles...
