in this context it means to "work hard". Aks WHO actually is RAF front line and takes the battle to the enemy - - thats right RAF Officers! They lead from the front, lead by example! They are not REMF rubber-desked-johnnys, sat thousands of miles away in Whitehall giving simple instructions for the slaughter of thousands of their men!

ARMY = get someone else to do it. Lower rank preferable.
