Is it actually going to sleep after 5 minutes?
If so it'll drop the connection and then it might take a moment to reconnect to your router when you wake it again.
Otherwise I had a similar problem where it'd drop the connection and then refuse to reconnect. It was something to do with a difference in the country the MB thought it was in compared to the router (everything was fine with the old but slow router). My router is made by a French company so it naturally thought it was in France. Then - apparently - it's very difficult for a laptop to determine where it is in the world and it guesses wrong really quite often. I think it depended which channel the router was on and so I think I had to switch the router to another channel (
