Definitely joshing and understand exactly what you're saying about the exam system.
Interestingly the seven year old boys I teach are incredibly competitive and will work really hard to try to beat girls (and other boys) in their work.
You have to work hard to make sure they're all interested in the learning however and for boys, that often means being more active. Perhaps by the time children are studying for GCSEs that's less appropriate along with all the other stuff that kicks in with adolescence.
