What's holding the African Nations back
(at least so far) has been the tactical naivity.
Recently a lot of them have used European coaches but most of those had been fairly mediocre in their domestic countries, or nothing special (kind of French versions of Harry Redknapp / Peter Reid / Bryan Robson).
Get a Guus Hiddinck / Terry Venables in at one of the larger footy nations (Nigeria / S. Africa / Ghana) and you might get a true contender 5 or 6 years later.
Right now I'd put them at a similar level as Denmark or Norway. The players are often more gifted but their tactics are somewhat lacking.
