Any ebay experts around?

We had an item listed at ?699 and some chancer asked this morning if we would accept ?400, which we politely declined. After several emails back and forth he noticed the same item listed on our website for ?599. After explaining the difference being due to ebay/paypal fees etc he offered to buy direct, so I sent an invoice and he paid by bank transfer. All very good, but then he emails ebay confirming the sale, which now means we will suffer their ridiculous fees. We're VAT registered as well just to make it worse.

He lives in Aberdeen and has a courier coming to collect from us first thing in the morning. Can I reasonably charge him the amount of our loss, ?60 + VAT? Or if he doesn't agree to that, or I don't get hold of him before the courier comes to collect, can I reasonably refuse to let the item go and give him a refund, which will mean the courier charging him for a 300 mile delivery that doesn't take place?

Fucking hate ebay.
