because they want the players to seem more approachable
they've recognised that a huge gap has grown between the common man and the player and twitter etc is a way of eroding that a bit.
Unfortunately they didn't bargain for players being so thick and vocal.
If I owned a club I'd pay a PR firm to do their tweets for them
