No, there's no "need" to, other than certain rights to do with illness/death...

...but that's quite a utilitarian view. There's no need to dance, eat ice cream or watch football either. But it's quite nice to do all of those things, though not simultaneously.

If two people feel they want publically to commit to being faithful to each other and to invite others to celebrate that then I think that's a Good Thing.
